What is Collagen?

Collagen is a protein produced naturally within the body. It is the most abundant protein in mammals – accounting for 25 to 35% of the bodies protein content. Not only does Collagen play an active role in the constant renewal of skin cels, it’s the major component of our hair and nails, not to mention our eyes and teeth, and it is also part of the connective tissue that helps keep our skin firm and supple.

Collagen is also one of the most predominant proteins found in our ligaments (the connective tissue that joins our bones together), our tendons (the connective tissue that joins the muscles to the bones) and our bones themselves. Consequently, collagen can simply be thought of as the glue that holds us together.

The Problem

As we age, collagen production in our body reduces. This typically occurs around the age of 25, when we become fully grown and our body beings to lose Collagen at a rate of 1.5% annually.. It is not immediately noticeable – but over time our skin sags and becomes thinner and easily damaged, our hair becomes lifeless, wrinkles start to appear, and our joints begin to stiffen and ache.

Why take a collagen supplement?

Maintaining a good level of collagen in your body is essential to help maintain good-looking, healthy skin, hair and nails, flexible joints and to help lower the risk of common diseases such as osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.
